Local Tree Service Company

Managing your property’s landscape takes regular maintenance and upkeep to keep your yard looking pristine. A part of yards that often get neglected are the trees. While most regular maintenance includes the clean up of sticks, nuts, and debris that has fallen from the tree into your grass, you also need to keep your trees heath and in good condition. If you look closely at your trees, you may notice:

  • broken branches
  • branches that no longer have leaves
  • branches are rubbing or scratching against your the home during a storm

These are all important signs that you or a professional tree service company should cut some branches and prune your trees.

Manage Your Trees’ Health With Proper Tree Care

Types of Tree Trimming & Pruning, and Cutting

A. Corrective Pruning

Trees require regular pruning practices to promote growth of a strong, central trunk, strengthen branches, and maintain weight balance of the tree. This includes the removal of any diseased or rubbing branches, branches with excessive lateral growth, and trimming of tree shoots or “suckers.” This will give the tree an aesthetically pleasing look while helping it grow stronger and maintain long-term health.

B. Deadwooding branches

Deadwooding is a fancy name for cutting branches off of a tree that are dead or dying. This often happens when branches are damaged during a storm, after seasonal changes like winter, or after infection from a bug.

This can also happen in more urban environments where one side of a tree gets more sunlight than another so the shaded side often has more dead branches than the other. Deadwooding is a good practice to stop rot from spreading to other parts of the tree, and avoiding branches from falling, damaging your property or injuring someone.

C. Property Clearance

Tree crowning, while not as invasive, also limits the tree height as you’re pruning back branches at the top of a tree to create a "crown" at the top, in conjunction with the lateral branches. This can reduce weight and make the tree more stable.

D. Tree Crowning and Topping

Limiting the height of your tree can be a benefit if you are looking to mitigate risk of a large tree falling over during a storm.

Tree topping is more commonly known but has been shown to severely damage trees as you’re stressing the tree and removing the ability to feed itself. This also leaves open wounds where pests and disease can infest your tree, harming it further.

Tree crowning, while not as invasive, also limits the tree height as you’re pruning back branches at the top of a tree to create a more crown with the lateral branches. This can reduce weight of heavy top branches making the tree more stable.

While crowning is more recommended, both can damage the tree if performed at the wrong time of year as any excessive removal of branches and leaves cut off the tree’s food supply and ability to nourish itself.

Best time of year for tree trimming

Every species of tree has its own yearly cycle of how early it begins to bloom or how late it drop leaves in the fall. The same can be said for when to trim branches.

While removing dead and diseased branches is always ok, as a general rule, trees receive the most benefit of trimming during early or late winter. Winter is preferred because trees have entered dormancy so their "wound closure" and healing" enzymes are increased by the tree. Additionally, most insects have died or left for winter, allowing the tree to avoid invasive creatures, rot, and disease. Pruning during dormancy in late winter also encourages new growth when spring and warmer weather arrives.

Do not prune trees in the fall as a warm weather can encourage growth, spread disease, and bugs look to nest so exposing the tree can damage it in the long run.

Cost of Tree Services and Tree Care

Every tree in your yard is different and we have to take into account all of the details to properly price our services. Our tree service professionals will come out to your home and inspect the property for a variety of factors to put together your estimate:

Tree Trimming And Removal Near Power Lines And A Pool Before
Tree Trimming And Removal Near Power Lines And A Pool After

Type of tree and size

The larger the tree, the more time it's going to take to cut it down and may require different equipment. Additionally, some trees like Oaks are stronger when healthy and tougher to cut down compared to a dead pine tree that's easier.

Location of the tree and vehicle access

If your home has a fenced in yard, we may not be able to park our truck where needed or we may have to use alternate machinery that's smaller to fit through your fencing.

Safety concerns

If your tree is near powerlines, a pool, or other structures, we may have to stage our tree cutting to avoid damaging any of your property or utilities.

Your desired requests

Some customers ask to retain the wood or woodchips. Depending on the situation, we can accommodate or haul a certain percentage away.

Project timing and scheduling

Emergency tree services require immediate attention while other projects may be scheduled out days or weeks in advance. We also try to schedule projects around town back-to-back to cut down travel expenses. This can lower or raise the cost of services.

Tree Care Testimonials

Double Ds Storm And Emergency Tree Service After Tree Fell On House Before
Double D’s was absolutely amazing!! I called Saturday morning with a stump that I needed taken out immediately as I completely forgot I needed it gone! He was able to come out next day! We met at 10:30, he started around 11is and he was done before 12:30. The stump was very large and he got it about 18inches into the ground! Absolutely loved how fast he was to get this job done! We opted to clean up the wood ourselves , but he was awesome and put everything in a pile for us! We will definitely use him for any other projects!
The only company that answered my phone call and followed up for site visit the next day. Very pleased with the work and very reasonably priced. Would higher recommend this company.
Dom was able to come out on a Saturday with short notice and help us with a project (digging a trench for rain drainage). We ran into a dense patch of roots and he helps us finish digging the canal! It was perfect, timely and reasonably priced. Couldn't be more thankful for them helping us out in a pinch.

Don came out, gave me a quote . I hired him and he did everything he said he would do. Hard working crew. Excellent job and excellent price.

I called Don for a stump grinding estimate. He said he could come right over and arrived in 20 minutes. He gave us a reasonable price so we told him to go ahead. Within an hour, the stump was removed and the area was cleaned up. Very pleased with the service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is responsible for cutting overhanging tree branches, me or my neighbor?

Generally speaking, you are responsible for everything on your property (within your property lines), including overhanging branches, even if the trunk of the tree is on your neighbor's property.

If you trim the tree too much, causing harm or killing the tree, you could be responsible for the cost of replacement.

You can always have a conversation with your neighbor if you want the branches trimmed but don't feel comfortable cutting the tree that's "on their property".

If you have trees near your property line, we highly recommend consulting with your insurance company as well.

Will my homeowners insurance cover preventative tree trimming?

Homeowners insurance typically does not cover preventative tree trimming.

In addition, if you do not remove dead or dangerous branches and the tree branch breaks and falls on your home/property, that could be considered negligence. You will want to contact your insurance company for more specific details.

What is the difference between tree trimming and pruning?

The end goal is the main difference.

Tree pruning is about the health of the tree - removing alive, damaged, dead, or diseased branches.

Tree trimming means to generally remove branches, typically for aesthetic reasons.

What do tree service companies do with the wood?

It depends on the size and type of wood. Some wood is chipped and used in landscaping beds as an alternative to mulch. Larger logs and hardwoods can be used as firewood or lumber depending on the size.
